Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands submits revised Lambeth fire station plans

[FIRST LOOK] Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands has submitted revised plans for this mixed–use fire station redevelopment project in Lambeth, south London

Part of a development partnership between Native Land and the building’s current occupiers the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, the 33,372 m² housing-led project will retain a working fire station on the site.

The historic Grade II-listed, Thames-side Fire Brigade building at Albert Embankment will be refurbished and extended with glass-clad penthouses.

The original building opened in 1937 and was designed by E P Wheeler of the London County Council architects department.

The station’s memorial hall, sculptured panels and an adjacent drill tower will also be retained and restored.

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands plans to create two residential buildings of 13 and 15-storeys respectively and a ‘courtyard’ garden to the rear of the building.

Facades on the new build structures will feature bronze-coloured metalwork and a mesh ‘exo-structure’.

The old fire station will gain a new covered ‘wash down’ area while a nearby ‘command and control centre’ will be relocated to a podium building beneath the courtyard garden.

The practice won the project in a competition in 2007.
