Liam O'Connor lands Bomber Command Memorial

Liam O’Connor Architects has seen off the likes of Foster + Partners to win the prize job of designing the new RAF Bomber Command Memorial in London

The commission is the third major memorial project for the practice, which has already designed the Armed Forces Memorial in Staffordshire (pictured) and the Commonwealth Memorial Gates at Hyde Park Corner in London, inaugurated by the Queen in 2002.

The new memorial will commemorate the 55,573 RAF Bomber Command aircrew killed during the Second World War – out of a total force of 125,000 – and will be built in the City of Westminster.

Liam O’Connor said: ‘This is a major design challenge, as the monument will not only commemorate the… aircrew who died serving their country during the Second World War, but will act as a new landmark set in the heart of the capital.’
