ROYAL EXCHANGE, MANCHESTER
This project revisits Levitt Bernstein's 1976 theatre within Manchester's Edwardian Cotton Exchange. A Lottery application for the refurbishment of the theatre was made in 1995. The bomb of 1996 changed the approach and programme, and the project now includes the necessary restoration works.
Radical changes have been made to both front and back of house, including the introduction of a new 120-seater studio theatre created within the old workshop. Restaurant, bars and shops have been redesigned, together with the front-of-house facilities around the theatre module.
The main auditorium has been improved technically, with the introduction of a new flying grid and the latest lighting and sound systems.A new opening roof to the module will allow mixing of the acoustic environments of theatre and hall. The entrances to the theatre have been redesigned and now include a glazed enclosure within the original arches. Access has been improved at the main entrance, with a new lift between pavement level and theatre level.
A new workshop is provided in a converted market building in Manchester's Northern Quarter. Completion is due in November.
