Levitate wins £1m cricket pavilion job

Levitate has won the competition to design a new £1 million cricket pavilion at Oundle School, near Peterborough

The London-based practice beat Feilden + Mawson, Jestico + Whiles and van Heyningen and Haward Architects (vHH) to land the coveted 315m² job.

Levitate’s scheme replaces the school’s existing pavilion with a new triangular building featuring a roof cantilevered over the spectators’ terrace.

Changing rooms and service areas will feature on the triangular building’s shorter sides, freeing up the centre of the plan and the full-height glazed long side of the triangle for functions.

A planning application has been submitted to the local authority, East Northamptonshire Council, and work is expected to start on site in July. The new structure is planned to open in April 2015.

Competition rival vHH was appointed to masterplan the school’s sports facilities in 2011 and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studio completed an £8 million lakeside science and technology centre for the school in 2008.

Past RIBA president Maxwell Hutchinson is a former pupil of the school.

Levitate was shortlisted for the AJ’s Small Projects Award this year for its walkway within the ruins of Sandsfoot Castle.
