Letters: York Alliance wants to be constructive

  • Comment

I am saddened, but not surprised, by the reaction of Terry Farrell to the position taken by the 'York Alliance' on his unfortunate Coppergate shopping centre in York (News, aj 3.12.98)

When the latest scheme went on public display in July this year the volume of criticism was such that the proposals were withdrawn for reconsideration. The revisions were only made available for public comment in mid-November. The changes have been merely cosmetic, and have provoked a great public outcry. This is hardly surprising when it is clear that the proposals radically depart from the original competition design on which Farrell was awarded the commission.

The alliance has been consistently constructive in its comments, as we agree that appropriate development in this part of York could be beneficial.

If Farrell wishes to construe our suggestions as being purely obstructive so be it. The fact that the planning system which he holds in such contempt allows for public comment counts for nothing. In his arrogance he would do away with it, and the alliance too, no doubt!
