letters Honouring the name of a master model-maker

  • Comment

Poor old Bassett-Lowke must be turning in his grave - 'of liquorice confection fame' indeed (picture caption, News, AJ 13.1.00).

W J Bassett-Lowke (1877-1953) was one of the finest model-making engineers of his day. In 1899 he founded the modelmaking business of Bassett-Lowke in Northampton, making the most wonderful model railways as well as model ships, aeroplanes and also engineering structures.

Bassett-Lowke was also something of a patron of architecture, commissioning work by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the reconstruction of his house at 78 Derngate in Northampton and later another house by Peter Behrens at Wellingborough Road, also in Northampton.

Christopher Boddington,

Newnham, Hertfordshire
