letters Don't forget thecost consultants

The work of Russell Light at Sheffield University in introducing students to the 'real world' of client liaison and brief development is to be applauded (aj 15.10.98, p46). Hopefully, the work of the clients and users in design education project will continue.

One aspect seemed to be missing from the scheme, namely the consideration of costs on a project and the question of how to relate the brief to a budget. Relationships with clients often break down because of lack of clarity about how to resolve these two matters. Would it not be appropriate for the work in the scheme to be carried out with the help of a cost consultant, so that students are put in the situation of having to achieve something within a budget? This would at the same time give training in liaison between different professions within the building industry.
