Six special awards - including the AJ's own award for the first building by a new practice - were announced alongside the Stirling Prize on Saturday. The winners, shown here, demonstrate the diversity of architecture in the UK and are featured on our new web tool, ajspecification. co. uk AJ/ROBIN ELLIS DESIGN BUILD FIRST BUILDING AWARD Cedar House in Logiealmond by Walker Architecture Built by Mark Walker for his own family, this flexible modular house achieves a feeling of opulence for the same cost as the equivalent modern house. The project is the subject of this week's building study, which starts on page 32.

CROWN ESTATES CONSERVATION AWARD Dulwich Picture Gallery by Rick Mather Architects This project made sense of a haphazard Soane building.

Dewhurst McFarlane was the engineer, Andrew Reid was the building services engineer and R Durtnell & Sons was the contractor.

ADAPT TRUST ACCESS AWARD The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London by Avery Associates The panel was impressed by the fact that backstage access was given as much consideration as the public areas.Arup was the engineer, Roger Preston was the services engineer and Laing was the contractor.

STEPHEN LAWRENCE PRIZE Hatherley Studio in Winchester by Richard Rose-Casemore The architect designed this £100,000 house for himself, exploiting an extremely tight sight which was previously deemed unusable.Price & Myers was the engineer, Arup was the environmental consultant and John Services was the contractor.

RIBA CLIENT OF THE YEAR Molendinar Park Housing Association, Glasgow Graham Square by McKeown Alexander, shown here, is the latest in a series of design-led housing projects. The jury praised the association's ability to bring the best out of architects.

RIBA JOURNAL SUSTAINABILITY AWARD VT Jubilee Campus, University of Nottingham, by Michael Hopkins and Partners Recycled materials are used alongside wind cowls and photovoltaic cells.Arup was structural and services engineer, Battle McCarthy was the environmental consultant and landscape architect and Bovis Construction was the contractor.
