Landolt + Brown completes 'green' West Hampstead station rebirth

  • Comment

[First look + plans + project data] Landolt + Brown’s new West Hampstead Thameslink Station in north London has opened

The project – past of Network Rail’s £6 billion Thameslink upgrade programme – created a new tree-lined route into the station which was previously plagued by overcrowding.

Landolt + Brown deployed green glazed bricks in a variety of shades with a saw-tooth profile to help guide pedestrians ‘intuitively’ into the new station.

The 100-metre long approach was built on top of a sloping railway embankment which was leveled to create a new ‘linear’ public space and wider entrance to the station.

The station building features a concourse with gates and ticket facilities alongside a small retail concession, toilets and staff accommodation.

A six metre by six metre steel frame structure was used for the building which features a glazed brick internal finishing on its northern wall and suspended metal tiling ceiling.

The external envelope is glazed on its south and east facing frontages and features folded and louvred steel paneling on its north and west elevations.

The concourse connects to an existing passenger bridge which provides step-free access to the platforms.
