Konishi Gaffney scoops Kilcreggan contest

  • Comment

Up-and-coming practice Konishi Gaffney has won the Kilcreggan competition to design a blueprint for the survival and growth of rural communities

The studio’s proposals for the foreshore of the village on the Roseneath Peninsula on the Firth of Clyde was chosen ahead of 56 entries, including finalistsLucid Architecture (2nd place) and Gordon Murray Architects (3rd place), in the contest organised by the Glasgow Institute of Architects.

The judges described Konishi Gaffney Architects’ plans for a new waterfront promenade including a pool and echo chamber as ‘particularly innovative and well considered’. Thy jury added that the winning scheme could create ‘a template for other rural communities to reinvigorate their communities by improving the amenity of their settlements and making them attractive as a destination for others’.

Kieran Gaffney said: ‘Our idea is that the design can be staged to suit the client’s funding – starting with small scale interventions. We hope that this would be a catalyst for some of the Roseneath Peninsula West Community Development Trust’s more ambitious proposals: they have a business plan for large scale wind turbines to generate £1-2million per year to fund their community regeneration initiatives.’
