Kiev and Sofia embassy schemes shelved

The Foreign Office has had to shelve two prestige design projects for embassies in Ukraine and Bulgaria.

A joint pfi project was to fund the Kiev and Sofia schemes because neither was big enough on its own for the pfi process, said an fo spokesman. 'We decided against this route when the Ukraine withdrew its offer of land.'

Plans for an embassy with offices in Sofia were on hold, he said. Jestico+Whiles worked on a drastic refurbishment of the Sofia embassy around 1995 which cost more than £2 million and included reroofing, reflooring and new conference and staff areas.

Life's a beach on the banks of the Mersey

The Civic Trust is planning two Merseyside developments - a £150 million indoor beach called Ocean Dome on the New Brighton seafront, and a major dockland development on the Wirral.

It has just started feasibility work on the dome, a stadium-type building with sliding roof, artificial beach and wave machine. Centre Vision Project, which includes the dome on the New Brighton seafront, will also include restaurants and theme park attractions. Architects have not been appointed.

New Wallasey Regeneration last week commissioned the trust's regeneration unit to draw up a strategy for the Centre Vision Project, and for the Wirral 12 Quays docklands development opposite Liverpool.
