Kevin McCloud wins planning for trio of AHMM schemes

Kevin McCloud, who has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for his development company Hab, has won approval for 108 new homes in Oxford

The houses and flats have been designed by AHMM and are split across three sites in the city with the majority billed as ‘affordable homes for rent or for shared ownership’.

Working in partnership with housing group GreenSquare under the Haboakus banner, the developer plans to build 40 homes at Barns Road, another 21 on the corner of Westlands Drive and Sutton Road, in Northway, and a further 47 at Dora Carr Close.

Oxford city councillors approved the proposals at Westlands Drive and Dora Carr Close last month, but rejected Hab’s plans for the site in Barns Road. The council’s planning review committee subsequently reversed the decision and ‘unanimously supported the scheme’.

Haboakus project manager Marita Ford said: ‘We’re delighted the committee has supported our proposals and granted permission for the Barns Road development. While we understand that those who objected to the application may not be happy with the decision, we are glad that the committee balanced their concerns with the wider benefits of the scheme.’

She added: ‘The Barns Road scheme will provide a new landmark building to improve the Cowley centre and much-needed affordable homes for purchase at a low starting share of 25 percent. It will also provide new community rooms and a new retail unit and workshop for the charity Emmaus Oxford, giving ex-homeless people new opportunities to gain valuable skills, work experience and self respect.’

“The 40 homes for sale and shared ownership at Barns Road will also generate the income required to build the new affordable rented housing and community facilities at the schemes in Northway.

‘Across our three linked developments we will provide 69% affordable housing, exceeding the 50% minimum planning requirement and helping to meet the urgent need for affordable homes in Oxford.’

Haboakus has been working with Oxford City Council for over two years on the linked proposals for the sites in Cowley and Northway.
