Kettle Collective has won an open international competition for a new Solar Innovation Centre in Dubai

The towering project for the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is planned as the centerpiece of a new solar park in the coastal United Arab Emirates city.

The full list of practices which had been competing for the scheme has yet to be revealed.

Known as the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Innovation Centre, the landmark structure will feature a conference centre, library, rotating restaurant and gallery.

The 88 metre-tall design – according to a statement from the practice – is inspired by divine geometry seen in traditional Islamic design. Ted Jacob Engineering is working with the practice on the project.

Former RMJM chief Tony Kettle, who co-founded the practice in 2012, said: ‘We are delighted to have been selected for this project, not only because of the competition that we were up against but because of the importance of this building in the future of Dubai.’

DEWA chief executive Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer added:  ‘he Solar Innovation Centre is a sustainable architecture and a value adding facility to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.’

He continued: ‘The landmark design celebrates the unique identity of the energy park reinforcing a sense of green Dubai as a leading example of sustainable development regionally and internationally.

‘The building will be a platform to showcase the latest solar and sustainable technologies and highlights DEWA.’

Other tall buildings designed by Kettle include Gazprom’s recently started new headquarters in St. Petersburg which was produced while at RMJM.
