Keppie in, Sasanbell out: delivery of Aberdeen mega-project begins

  • Comment

AJ100 practice Keppie Design has taken over the delivery of the new £333m Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) – a scheme originally designed by emerging practice Sasanbell

The appointment comes as Aberdeen City Council approved the huge financial package for the centre at Bucksburn, which is backed by Henry Boot Developments working with the local authority.

The new centre forms part of the wider development of the Rowett North masterplan, just south of Aberdeen International Airport, also drawn up by Glasgow-based Sasanbell (AJ 07.06.12).

The masterplan includes three hotels, an energy centre, about 60,000m² of offices and 6,000m² of leisure space plus landscaping, parkland, public realm, access routes and car and coach parking.

Explaining the handover to Keppie, a spokesman for Henry Boot Developments said: ‘It was always intended to have two sets of architects – design architects and delivery architects.  This approach is standard practice in the industry.  The first, Sasanbell, are the design architects, and Keppie Design are the delivery architects.

‘Keppie Design has a proven track record in delivering large-scale projects such as this, having fulfilled a similar role at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.’

A spokesman for Sasanbell, which was founded in 2010 by former Keppie directors Babak Sasan and Charles Bell, said: ‘[We] were the original concept architect which supported Henry Boot Developments with its bid through the competitive dialogue period, securing preferred development partner status with Aberdeen City Council in January 2014.

‘Sasanabell was appointed to produce the masterplan for the entire North Rowett Site and the Concept Design (RIBA Stage 2) for the New AECC. [We] completed our commission during December 2014.’
