Kay Elliot Architects has been given the go-ahead for this £12 million mixed-use restaurant, housing and holiday home on an empty plot on Torquay’s promenade
According to the local practice, the waterfront scheme was inspired by the Riveria style with its ‘simple linear form and curved balconies’ echoing the Modernist designs of early 20th century British seaside architecture.
The 5,500m² Abbey Crescent project for developer Havard Tisdale includes four restaurants, 14 flats, 14 serviced apartments and 32 parking spaces.
Richard Maddock, a director at Kay Elliott, said: ‘Abbey Crescent will be a landmark building worthy of its historic coastal surroundings and an economic catalyst that will totally transform this longstanding vacant site in one of Britain’s best-loved seaside resorts.’
The architect’s view
The height and massing of the building respond to its coastal surroundings, providing a strong presence at its western end towards Torre Abbey Sands, stepping down and respecting the lower retained buildings and the listed Royal Terrace Gardens to the east. The proportions of the building have also been carefully balanced to take account of the key views of the building, especially on the approach to the harbour.
Due to the gateway nature of the site, the landscape setting of the proposals is considered an integral part of the scheme. The design proposes significant improvements to the public realm adjacent prioritising pedestrian movement between the waterfront, promenade and nearby Royal Terrace Gardens whilst successfully accommodating 14,000 vehicles per day.
Sustainability was a key driver behind the design and passive techniques have been used where possible, including protecting south facing windows from solar gain using the balconies and minimising the size of north facing windows to prevent heat loss.
