Karakusevic Carson Architect has won planning for the second phase of the overhaul of the Colville Estate in Hackney

The practice, which has also masterplanned the wider regeneration of the east London estate and already completed the first phase, secured permission for the 209-home, mixed tenure scheme last Wednesday (7 November).

The project will create 113 homes for social renting, 34 for shared ownership, and 62 for private sale, as well as a community centre, retail space, and landscaping including a play area.

Existing tenants will be re-housed locally, with the right to return to a new home at Colville.

The revamp of the rundown Colville Estate involves the phased demolition of more than 400 existing homes and the delivery of 935 new ones for social renting, shared ownership and private sale, including six retained homes; as well as new shops; children’s play facilities; a new community centre; shared open space; balconies and private gardens.

Karakusevic Carson Architects is also among the practices vying for the high-rise third phase of the estate’s overhaul alongside the likes of AHMM, David Chipperfield and Feilden Clegg Bradley (see AJ 26.10.2012).
Meanwhile Hawkins\Brown landed the go-ahead for the regeneration of Bridge House and Marian Court. The scheme will see the demolition of two block currently housing 135 flats and the creation of 194 homes, including for social renting and shared ownership, family-sized homes, retail space and a new community centre.
