Anish Kapoor’s ‘Orbit’ monument has officially killed off plans to re-build the 1951 Skylon on the Olympic site
The Powell & Moya-designed, cigar-shaped structure will not be resurrected in the Olympic Park during the games, despite early negotiations between Skylon supporters and Games’ organisers.
The AJ revealed in 2009 that campaigners for the 90m-tall Festival of Britain landmark, including former RIBA president Jack Pringle, were pushing for it to be built in a prominent position close to the Games.
However, shortly after announcing Kapoor’s Olympic monument London mayor Boris Johnson confirmed: ‘There are no plans to re-build the Skylon.’
The proposed Kapoor structure has provoked almost universal scorn from the design profession since it was unveiled last Wednesday (31 March).
