Johnson Community Hospital, Lincolnshire, by Watkins Gray International

[FIRST LOOK] The new £23m Johnson Community Hospital has opened in Spalding, Lincolnshire

The 8,500m² sustainable facility which is part of the Three Shires Batch PFI scheme has been officially delivered to Lincolnshire NHS Primary Care Trust.

The 32-bed hospital consolidates numerous, previously seperate, services including outpatients clinics, minor injuries service, a mental health day centre, child and adolescent services, inpatients, an ambulance station and Trust offices.

The hospital features a main entrance canopy with curved perforated walls and leaf shaped roof lights which the architects believe will relieve anxiety and draw people into the double height atrium.

Project architect Oana Gavriliu, comments, ‘We have used a harmonious architectural vocabulary that allows separate identities for different departments while maintaining the unity of the overall design’.

Sustainibilty was a primary design concern and the project team worked closely with the Carbon Trust to maximise natural ventilation and mitigating energy loss.

Len Hartley Project Manager for NHS Lincolnshire said: ‘the design of our new community hospital is ultra-modern which provides a very warm and welcoming experience to any hospital visit. It looks and feels exciting, more like a modern five-star hotel, yet it provides an exciting environment in which our staff are proud to work and our patients expectations are delivered.’

  • It's difficult to see anything remotely harmonious in these images, externally or internally. Perhaps it is too much to expect simplicity and elegance in UK hospitals.
