JOHN NEWTON Abbey hides its basement secret

  • Comment

Newlath 2000 Cavity Membrane applied to the basement walls of the medieval abbey at Ixworth in Suffolk not only creates a barrier which protects the original wall from damp and moisture penetration, but also produces a stable surface for a secondary wall.

The profiled sheet of virgin polypropylene, with a thickness of 0.5mm with studs 5mm deep, creates an air gap which allows the wall to breathe. Special waterproof fixings were installed at 250mm centres, and a render key to the mesh outer surface was finished to match the original walls, ensuring the abbey is available for future generations to enjoy.
