Jenkins Design to move Coronation Street

  • Comment

Jenkins Design Services has been appointed to mastermind ITV’s move from its Manchester home to the Orange Building in MediaCityUK at Salford Quays

As well as new office and news studio accommodation, the scheme includes a new production facility for long-running soap opera Coronation Street which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Meanwhile ITV has chosen Mace to project manage and act as construction manager for the project - which will see a new Coronation Street set built on the 7.7-acre site in time for the 2012 move.

Actors and production staff will get to the new site at Trafford Wharf - next to DAniel Libeskind’s Imperial War Museum North - via a new bridge built to link it to the rest of the MediaCityUK complex.

A new external film set will also be built that, although to a bigger scale, will look the same ‘as the Weatherfield known in living rooms up and down the country’.

There will also be two sound stage buildings built as part of the production centre, which will also include specialist production facilities, offices and dressing rooms.

Mace director Rob Ewen said: ‘Coronation Street is an iconic brand and our appointment as both project and construction managers for the project to replicate the set and everything that makes Coronation Street work is just fantastic appointment.

‘The Coronation Street project will underpin the future development of our Manchester office and we are delighted to have this opportunity to work with ITV on these exciting projects.’

Manchester-based Jenkins Design Services is also working as lead consultant for ITV on the relocation of Emmerdale production facility within the ITV Yorkshire television centre on Kirkstall Road, Leeds, which is due to complete January 2011.
