South Africa's National Monuments Council has posthumously awarded its gold medal to professor Vivienne Japha, the architect who died tragically in a road accident at the uia Congress in Beijing last year. The president of the Institute of South African Architects, Japha had negotiated its re-entry into the UIA, the international architectural body. The National Monuments Council referred to her 'truly monumental contribution at so many levels'.
