Charles Rennie Mackintosh's only church, at Queen's Cross and opened in October 1899, was vacated by the Church of Scotland in 1976. It has since been home to the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, which baulked at the £80,000 purchase price required by the Kirk when the society's lease ran out. But never fear: it has been saved for the nation with funds donated by Scottish-born Dr Thomas Howarth, who emigrated to Canada in 1958 and become became dean of the architectural faculty at Toronto University from 1967-74. He owes a debt to crm: as the subject of his PhD, the great architect gave him his first academic break.
