The Italian Space Agency (asi) and the department of the faculty of architecture of the university of Rome have launched a two-stage European competition for the agency's new headquarters in Rome. The site, a former military barracks in the Flaminio area north of the historic centre, is next to the site for Zaha Hadid's Centre for Contemporary Arts and in front of an auditorium by Renzo Piano, being built. Deadline for initial submissions is January 2000. A winner will be chosen in summer 2000. Details: tel 0039 06 8567438.

Oscar Faber has won an award for its environmental awareness at each stage of the planning, development and building process. The Electricity Industry Awards praised the engineer, which worked on Glasgow Lighthouse, the INTEGER House and Sainsbury's Millennium Store, all of which are sustainable- technology demonstration projects, says Oscar Faber.
