Interesting to see how my letter was (mis)read

LETTERS

I was most interested to read the conflicting replies ofMr Dowlman and Mr Munday to my letter on building societies and the architect (Letters, AJ 4.11.99).

Mr Dowlman ( MBIAT ) states categorically that 'all financial institutions recognise the BIAT qualification as suitable for selfbuild.'Ifthis is the case,I am puzzled as to why Mr Dowlman's technologist certificate wil be suitable and yet the architect's certificate as provided by Mr Munday was not acceptable to his client's building society which insisted upon retrospective indemnity from Zurich.

Mr Dowlman has taken my letter as a personal slight against technologists - which was not its intention.I was merely aggrieved at the ignorance and inconsistency which exists on the part of a building society and still maintain that only chartered architects and surveyors are regarded by the 'majority'offinancial institutions as suitably qualified to certify a self-build project.
