Selected works of Brazil’s most prominent architect, Oscar Niemeyer, who turned 102 this week
Despite it being his 102nd birthday, Oscar Niemeyer spent Tuesday like any other working day, by travelling from the home in Ipanema that he shares with a wife 40 years his junior to work in his office in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro.
He told Brazzil magazine: ‘Birthday to me is a day like any other, but I feel like I need to talk to you… We look back and see so much work. Life is too complicated. I pass through it without any problems, fortunately. The man has to be fraternal. We have to look the other and walk together. I’m like the others. I don’t see any special quality in me. I just worked and had some of my ideas well used.’
Niemeyer celebrated his birthday by having lunch with his seven-year-old great-great-granddaughter Camila. The AJ marks the occasion with the above slideshow of the great man’s work.
Below is a video interview Niemeyer gave last year on his 101 birthday.
