The official 9/11 memorial in New York has been unveiled in advance of the 10th anniversary of the attacks

The Reflecting Absence design, by architect Michael Arad , features waterfalls cascading into reflecting pools where the towers stood. The scheme was chosen ahead of more than 5,000 entrants into a design contest in 2004.

The names of all those killed on September 11, 2001, and in the World Trade Center attack on February 26, 1993, are inscribed on bronze parapets surrounding the waterfalls in the exact footprint of the former Twin Towers.

The fountains stand in an three hectare paved plaza, and are nestled within a grove of swamp white oak trees that will grow as tall as 18m.

The memorial will open to the public on September 12, 2011.

A museum showcasing remnants of the original Trade Centre will open next year.
