in brief: Florence looks to the future

Some of the world's top architects, including Frank Gehry, Sir Norman Foster and I M Pei, have been invited to redesign a famous piazza in Florence. Piazza Castellani will form the new exit of the Uffizi Gallery. Competition invitations were sent by Italy's minister for culture Walter Veltroni, who is looking for a scheme that challenges traditional ideas of Florentine architecture and will move the city into the twenty-first century.
