IMAX costs nowhere near doubled

  • Comment

I thoroughly enjoyed Martin Pawley's piece on the new bfi London imax cinema at Waterloo (aj 6.5.99) but for one misleading statement about costs - Pawley suggests that the final project costs doubled from the 1991 estimate of 10 million.

When the building actually started on site in November 1997, the estimated construction costs had risen by less than a million pounds, compared to the 1991 estimate (considerably less than inflation) and, when opened to the public 17 months later, actual construction costs had exceed the pre-construction estimate by approximately 6.8 per cent.

An increase yes - but quite of quite different proportions to that suggested.
