Blackfriars Station, London has undergone a four year long redevelopment programme. Originally opened in 1886, the station has now reopened to provide improved interchange links between the National Rail and underground services.
Hunter Douglas’s high performance Quadroclad was used in the main concourse of the station for wall cladding and soffit panelling. Quadroclad metal facades feature lightweight skins fused to an expanded honeycomb core of aluminum for extreme strength and flatness in sizes up to up to 1500 mm wide and 6000 mm long. The system offers specialty shapes and curves, as well as a wide range of colours.
The £350m redevelopment scheme began in 2008. The project includes the creation of a common entrance at the north end of the rail bridge spanning the River Thames. Platform lengths have been increased to accommodate 50% longer trains. Blackfriars’ capacity is expected to increase from 12 to 24 trains an hour in each direction.
Architects Jacobs Engineering were responsible for the design of the station building. The rail bridge, which will be the first in London to span the entire width of the Thames, was designed by Tony Gee and Partners.
Hunter Douglas’s quality Quadroclad system was specified for this high profile project because the open-joint facade maintains ventilation around the façade whilst acting as a good barrier against rain and wind, the system is ideal for both new construction and over cladding projects.
Developers of the Blackfriars renovation were keen to keep environmental concerns in mind. The new station roof has been equipped with 600m2 of PV cells that will produce over 1MW of energy. The £7.3m solar array is the largest of its kind in London. It was funded by the Department of Transport’s Safety and Environment Fund.
