News reaches me of a proposal for the Royal Naval College at Greenwich, discarded by the Ministry of Defence under the last government and still seeking some tender loving care from a new owner - not that there is any shortage of suitors, including Trinity College of Music. Rumour has it that the Sultan of Brunei is negotiating a head lease to convert one of the finest set-pieces of urban design in Europe, if not the world, into a private hospital. On the subject of Greenwich, a Times reader recently drove into London from the south and spotted two adjacent temporary road signs. One read 'Millennium Dome Construction Traffic', the other 'Peter the Great Exhibition'. 'Are they by some chance related?' he enquired.
