Hopkins Architects has won an international contest to design a new €189million (£162 million) public hospital project in La Spezia, Italy

The team, which includes Italian engineering company Politecnica and healthcare specialist Dott Fabrizio Gemmi, was picked ahead of 21 bidders for the design and build project, sat on a panoramic site amongst olive groves above the town of La Spezia.

The scheme will replace the existing local Felettino hospital with a larger 75,000m² general hospital .

Mike Taylor, senior partner at Hopkins Architects, said: ‘Our work has always been very well received in Italy and this exciting new project provides the chance to demonstrate first hand what we can do for such an important public building in a stunningly beautiful location.’

‘We are committed to delivering an innovative high quality healthcare facility to compete with the best hospitals in Europe and this project, which will serve the west of Liguria extending to north Tuscany, will have a significant impact on many people’s lives.’.

As well as its award-winning work at Guy’s & St Thomas’ with the Evelina Childrens’ Hospital, the practice is currently working on the £110 million Ambulatory Cancer Centre at the UCLH - the first of its kind outside the United States.
