Holder Mathias wins go ahead for East Sussex seaside flats

  • Comment

[First look + plans] Nine luxury apartments in Rottingdean, designed by Holder Mathias, have been granted planning permission by Brighton and Hove Council

The apartments in the East Sussex village feature terraces and balconies overlooking the seafront, undercroft car parking and a cliff top garden.

According to the practice, a series of horizontal layers and staggered balconies will ‘maintain privacy and reduce the apparent mass’ of the £2.1 million development.

The mix of two and three-bed apartments will be orientated so that all living rooms and master bedrooms have seaside views.

Simon Crockford, project architect at Holder Mathias, says: ‘Central to the design was the concept of ensuring that all habitable rooms in each apartment take advantage of the breathtaking views.

‘The narrow site was particularly challenging because of the sloping topography, and so we had to think about designing a building with features that ‘fanned outwards’ as you progressed towards the sea.’
