News

Hodder Associates received a welcome New Year’s gift when the practice clinched its first bridge competition win, and, at the same time, its first project in Manchester City Centre. The firm’s design for a bridge link between the refaced Arndale and bdp’s new Marks and Spencer store - both symbols of a renewed Manchester after the bomb - was chosen ahead of three other shortlisted teams. The £500,000 bridge, designed with Ove Arup, is an hourglass-shaped spiral of steel and glass with a timber walkway threading through the largely transparent glass tube. It will span Corporation Street at the exact site where the ira bomb of 1996 exploded. ‘It’s very important for the city,’ said Hodder, ‘and will be the final piece in the jigsaw, a landmark.’
