HNW opens door on Bognor Myplace scheme

  • Comment

[First look + plans] Chichester-based HNW Architects has completed this Myplace youth centre on the Bognor Regis Community College Campus

The Phoenix Centre is one of 63 centres backed by The Big Lottery Fund on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE) and Aiming High for Disabled Children.

As well as receiving £1.5 million from the lottery, the scheme was also funded by West Sussex County Council.

The architect’s view

The youth facility has been driven in its development by the active participation of young people and their views and needs. By working closely with young people right from the start they have had a large say in what they wanted. Through their involvement in the project, there is a sense of pride and ownership among young people and a strong sense of what the centre represents to them.
The Phoenix Centre is an informal meeting place hosting a youth centre, performance space, Connexions information, advice and guidance centre and young people’s healthy living centre. It is a meeting place where young people can relax, feel safe and supported, enjoy new experiences and have fun. The challenge has been to reconcile the imagination of young people and their requirements and the needs of the community in a single multi-functional Centre that incorporates very specialist facilities such as the sensory room and recording and music studios within a compact footprint.
