Herzog & de Meuron feels pinch

Several UK projects have been delayed, including Lord’s Cricket Ground and Portsmouth arena

Two of Herzog & de Meuron’s largest London projects have been delayed, just days after the Swiss practice’s proposals for Portsmouth Football Club’s new stadium were mothballed.

The timescale for the so-called ‘credit crunch-busting’ skyscraper scheme near London Bridge, and the firm’s £200 million masterplan for Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, has slipped significantly.

The high-rise project for the Sellar Property Group, which has three ‘snaking’ towers located near Renzo Piano’s under-construction Shard, was due to be unveiled in mid-February, but has been delayed until at least late summer.

The Lord’s scheme was due to be revealed earlier this year. A spokesperson from Lord’s owner Marylebone Cricket Club maintained that ‘good progress’ had been made on the design development but refused to give further timescales.

On 19 March, Portsmouth FC and the Sellar Property Group announced that plans to build a 45,000-seat arena had been postponed for nearly a decade. The club blamed the credit crunch.

  • Most of the credit crunched schemes I haven't given a damn about, as they've been so ugly. But it's a shame about Portsmouth FC - I'd actually like to see that built.
