Heneghan Peng's Greenwich architecture school recommended for planning

Heneghan Peng’s project to build a new home for the Greenwich school of architecture has been recommended for approval by planning officers

Set to go before Greenwich Council’s planning committee shortly, the design - which will include exhibition spaces, meeting rooms and a cafe - has cleared consultations with English Heritage and the Commission for Architecture & the Built Environment (CABE).

According to the University of Greenwich, Council officers described the design as ‘sympathetic’ to its location in terms of scale, massing and external appearance.

Speaking of Heneghan Peng’s design, they said: ‘This is a very high quality proposal, located in a very important historic town centre, and one of the most prestigious buildings to come forward in Greenwich Town Centre in recent years, given its intrinsic quality and the significance of its setting.’

The new addition to Stockwell Street hopes to revitalise a ‘neglected’ site and bring the community together through the use of shared facilities.

Detailed specifications regarding materials for the facade and surrounding paved areas are still to be agreed between the council and the university, and final approval is also required from the Mayor of London.

The University has confirmed that preparatory works on site have started and will continue over the summer. Construction is due to commence in the autumn, and the building is expected to be completed by 2014.
