The UK office army (including the architectural battalion) descended on Berlin for its annual conference this year, and an excellent choice of city it turned out to be, blossoming with new buildings of every type. Gossip on the people front included the abrupt departure of a former BCO president Michael Soames from agent Knight Frank (he spent a lot of conference time on his mobile).
The hot Berlin architects are Mathias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton after their terrific Sydney art gallery competition win; now they have to go through the penury of public consultation with a Sydney community stung by a poor building close to the Opera House. They needn't worry about quality this time, as a visit to Sauerbruch Hutton's GSW office headquarters confirmed.
Elegance, colour, and seemingly effortless environmental strategies abound, the latter a result of much hard work by Arup.
