[Images + drawings + credits] Extension to an existing house located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
More from: 6 houses by 6 practices
Heatherlands adds to an existing house located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Dorset-Devon border. The design responds to the folding of the landscape and roof pitches of the existing house.
The clients, avid swimmers, wanted a major upgrade that included a gym, sauna and pool as well as a new master bedroom suite, living room, garage and storage.
The new living room, to the west, forms a transition point between old and new, collecting reflected views and light. Views out also provide a visual connection to a restored Airstream trailer that functions as an additional guest room.
The new structure takes the stance of an outbuilding, acting as a paddock boundary while protecting the gardens and defining a new view from the south.
The pool is housed within a new sunken level. To reach it, the route from the living room descends into progressively heavier and enclosed areas including vertical, top-lit spaces within the core. Above, the master suite pushes out westwards, opening to spectacular views and providing privacy from the house.
The new build includes passive ventilation, is heavily insulated and has new larch rainscreens while the existing home has been clad with shingles.
