Hayward display shows practice deserved win

I was pleased to see a small item in last week's AJ saying that Wells Mackereth has won the competition to design a restaurant and hotel complex in London's Covent Garden (AJ 12.4.01). I recently visited the two exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery in London, on Brassai and Goya, that the practice designed. This pair of shows, cleverly linked by a quote from Brassai about Goya, were of exemplary design. The nature of the exhibits meant that the format was inevitably repetitive - the Goya show consisted largely of flat rectangles, the Brassai show was the same. Yet each exhibition had a distinct personality. Congratulations - it is delightful to learn that we will be seeing more permanent design from this talented practice.
