Hawkins\Brown wins planning for Clapham Junction redevelopment

Hawkins\Brown has won planning permission for a contentious £120 million revamp of a Peabody housing estate in Clapham Junction, London

The Peabody-backed project – which includes buildings of between four and 12 storeys – replaces an existing 1930s housing estate with 527 apartments and a 530m² community ‘hub’.

Approved by Wandsworth Council’s planning committee last week, the application will be referred to the Mayor of London for final approval.

Peabody development director, Claire Bennie, welcomed the decision, describing the development as ‘much needed and innovative’.

She said: ‘Peabody will invest £120m in this major scheme that will see the regeneration and development of 527 homes, with over half dedicated to affordable housing.’

Hawkins\Brown partner David Bickle said: ‘The positive decision endorses the hard work, creativity and commitment of the whole team over the past five years and offers new opportunities for residents and the wider community.’

The studio’s original plans for the site were first unveiled in 2009 but a revised application was made in March this year.

Campaigner Cyril Richert of the Clapham Junction Action Group described the approval as a ‘failure’ for local residents. He claimed more than 300 local people objected to the scheme.

He said: ‘Although Peabody cheered at the result and the council officers looked greatly relieved their recommendation was followed, it is clear that it is a failure.’
