Plans for Preston Barracks in Brighton by HASSELL, Studio Egret West, TP Bennett and Stride Treglown have been given planning permission

The £300million scheme, by developer U+I covers four parcels of land totalling 5.32ha on opposite sides of the city’s Preston Road.

It will provide 369 new homes, a new 6,400m² home for Brighton University’s business school, a 4,600m² hub for start-up businesses and entrepreneurs and 1,338 student flats.

University vice chancellor Debra Humphris, said: ‘We are delighted that our plans have been approved. This partnership aims to deliver one of the most ambitious and transformational projects for the city in a neighbourhood where meaningful regeneration is long overdue.’

The student accommodation will be provided in five blocks of between nine and 18 storeys.

A report by planners said: ‘As part of the masterplan, one of the stated key principles is to provide a common architectural language.

‘For example, all the buildings on the site use metal framed windows in a dark grey colour.

‘The residential and student buildings are consistent in brick facing, chosen for its durability and possibilities for variation.’
