'Handkerchief' domes

  • Comment

Three long shopping malls link the anchor stores in the triangular plan, and each of the two-storey links has its own theme - family, media and 'elegant lifestyle'. To reinforce the themes of each area, three different roofs were designed by project architect Benoy, although each is based on a common structure of 15 vaulted sections to provide the necessary height, light, ventilation and acoustic absorbance.

There are also three kinds of dome or vault: one mall comprises wedge- shaped, curved sections which interlock in a dog-tooth pattern to give alternating sections of glass and aluminium; another is a barrel vault with curved cut-away glazed sections between each vault; and the third - and most complex - is a series of domed vaults which rise from four square corners.

Nicknamed the 'handkerchief', each dome measures 15 x 18.9m, with a radius of 13.44m, and the scale and three-dimensional geometry required led to KAL-ZIPregistered being an obvious choice.
