Zaha Hadid Architects has become the latest big-name architect to be asked to design a car park at Miami Beach, Florida
The UK-based architect follows in the footsteps of Herzog & de Meuron, Arquitectonica, Enrique Norten and Perkins & Will to commissioned to build a garage in the coastal resort city.
Hadid, who was recently appointed to Pritzker Prize jury, will draw up plans for a car park at Collins Park, near to the New World Centre designed by Frank Gehry. The designs have yet to be revealed.
Speaking to the lcoal press, Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower, said: ‘Even our parking garages are more than a group of parking spaces. Some have become destinations within themselves and have attained individual iconic status. Every building can be a work of art.’
However Hadid has not been so lucky in the competition to design the new Bogotá International Convention Cente in Colombia.
The practice’s shortlisted proposal (pictured) lost out to a scheme by eventual competition winners Bermúdez & Herreros Architects - a colloboration between Colombian Daniel Bermúdez and Spain’s Juan Herreros (see their victorious scheme here).
The Bogotá International Convention Cente shortlist in full (see AJ 20.06.2011):
• Diller Scofidio + Renfro (USA) with UdeB (Colombia)
• Saucier Perrote Architectes (Canada)
• Snohetta (Norway) with RIR (Colombia)
• Zaha Hadid Architects with JMPF (Colombia)
