Grimshaw's overseas work booms despite UK fall

Big wins in China and the Middle East helped London-headquartered practice Grimshaw boost its turnover in 2011 despite falling workloads in the UK and Europe

The company, which also has offices in the US and Australia, recorded a turnover of £17.7 million in the 12 months to 31 March 2011, it has revealed.

This was up from £16.6 million in the previous year, although pre-tax profit fell by more than 40 per cent to £1.37 million in the same period.

Turnover fell in the UK and in Europe – but rose by more than 50 per cent to £6.36 million in the rest of the world.

A spokesman said the practice had expanded its presence outside the UK during the financial year.

‘We moved into bigger premises in New York, did something similar in Melbourne, and opened our first office in Sydney,’ he said.

‘We are well-placed to win work and intend to win more in the Asia-Pacific area, as well as the Middle East and Europe.’

He said the firm won its first major jobs in the Middle East during the 2011 financial year, as well as two large jobs in China.

One of these was a mixed-use scheme in Hangzhou that involved transforming an industrial area into a social district.

Grimshaw has also won three projects in mainland Europe in the past three months, and intends to compete for work across the world in 2012.

‘We don’t want to pigeonhole ourselves,’ said the spokesman. ‘We will keep building on our strengths and try to expand in sectors where we’ve had success in the past.’

The studio’s redevelopment of London Bridge Station (pictured) was given the go-ahead by local authority Southwark Council last month.
