Grimshaw’s Fulton Center crowned AJ120 Building of the Year

Grimshaw Architects’ Fulton Centre in New York has been named the AJ120 Building of the Year 2015

The annual award is given in recognition of the finest building completed by any of the UK’s top 100 practices during the past year.

The renewed, expanded subway station in Lower Manhattan provides an evocative environment for thousands of daily passengers, and sets a standard for transport interchange design for aspiring world cities, London included.

Katharine Heron described it as a combination of ‘American brute force engineering and British design sophistication’.

The project comprises a number of elements: new and remodelled entry points, reconfigured passageways and platform access, restoration of an adjacent building and historic platform tilework, as well as a new ‘head house’ (station building) – incorporating a large-scale artwork – that doubles as a grand civic space.

Sadie Morgan said: ‘It satisfies a complex brief with intelligence and ambition.’

Jay Merrick added: ‘The project is exemplary in people-moving, mixed-use, and streetscape terms. That a British practice achieved it is remarkable.’

Of the shortlist, Alan Dunlop commented: ‘There was some excellent work of varied building types and size, carried through from inception to completion with rigour.’

Last year the prize was picked up by the new Reid building at the Glasgow School of Art by Steven Holl Architects and Glasgow-based JM Architects.
