Grimshaw lands spot on Buffalo university shortlist

Grimshaw has been shortlisted to design a $375m (£235m) School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences for the University at Buffalo in the US

The firm is leading a consortium that will compete with four others for the project in New York State. HOK and Rafael Vinoly are also shortlisted.

Up to 48,000m² of space will be created by the scheme within a building up to 12 storeys high.

The competition is being led by Robert Shibley, dean of the university’s School of Architecture and Planning, who has described it as ‘an attempt to elevate the dialogue about the quality of the architecture’.

The firms will present their proposals later this month, with a final selection to be made at the end of March.

Construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2013 and be completed three years later.
