Grimshaw bags Monchengladbach masterplan job

Grimshaw has won a competition to develop a masterplan for the centre of the German city of Monchengladbach

The practice, which has offices in London, New York, Sydney and Melbourne, won the work as part of a drive for more masterplanning work across the world.

A group of local business acting as MG 3.0 Masterplan Mönchengladbach aims to improve the economy and appearance of the city centre.

Grimshaw won the competition in association with local project partners Konrath & Wennemar and FSWLA.

It aims to remodel Monchengladbach – which has two disparate centres since its merger with Rheydt – into a city with ‘two hearts that beat together’.

Grimshaw said its vision would acknowledge the different identities and functions of each centre, while ensuring that they worked together as a whole.

A spokesman for the practice said it was bidding for masterplanning work across Europe and the wider world.

‘This is our first masterplan success in Germany but it very much fits in with out sector strategy,’ he added.

As well as UK masterplan wins in Wimbledon and North Harlow, Grimshaw is working on the New York University 2031 masterplan, Triangle Research Park in North Carolina, and the area around Brisbane Airport.

Mönchengladbach, which is in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, close to the Dutch border, has a population of about 270,000.
