[First look] Grimshaw has won the prize project to design a 500m² mobile art pavilion in Brazil

The competition-winning scheme for cultural organisation Mobilizarte which will launch in the summer of 2012 and tour the 10 main cities of Brazil in the run up to the country’s World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016.

The pavilion will host international exhibitions, film festivals and other arts and educational events.

The architect’s view:

Inspired by Brazilian art, culture and the spirit of the Brazilian Modern Movement, the pavilion’s design is governed by the logistical challenges of mobility. The materials and construction systems allow multiple configurations with straight forward installation and dismantling. A unique system of floating foil and plastic balloons on the roof provide a striking presence, whilst simultaneously creating adjustable natural ventilation and opportunities for unique lighting schemes.
The design forms part of a collaboration with Arup Rio de Janeiro and adapts environmentally, economically and socially to every location. Each design will offer a custom design solution for each city involved. A kit of parts and prefabricated wood trusses allows the design team to arrange the scheme in multiple ways. Upon the pavilion’s arrival, the site will be a distinct, landscaped garden created with the assistance of the local community, establishing an essential connection to inspire the host cities.
