Greenwich Olympic venue scrapped

The Olympic Board has agreed to use Wembley Arena rather than build a new temporary venue on the North Greenwich Peninsula

The move, which means architects will again miss out on the chance to design for the Olympics (see AJ 02.10.09), will see rhythmic gymnastics and badminton played in North London during the 2012 Games instead of in a new hall close to the 0² Arena.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games will present the proposals to the sports federations next week for approval.

Meanwhile, the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich (pictured) has been confirmed as the venue for shooting and paralympic archery. A planning application is due to be submitted in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, identified as a potential alternative London 2012 venue location due to its proximity to the Olympic Park, has been identified as a suitable location for training venues and other operations during the Games.

  • Piece by piece, the elements upon which the Olympic bid was won, are being removed, deleted, diluted.......at what point does the bid upon which the Games were secured become a lie?

  • I can't help thinking that the Olympic Games, the competitors, and spectators would have been much better served had the Olympics been awarded to Paris.

  • Will the comparison between the Beijing spectacle and the London debacle mark the public conscience as the transitory point in history from the old European colonial powers to the re-emerging eastern economies of the 21st Century?

  • Of course they would have been better in Paris, I hate to say it but the French have a way of getting things done - no interferring types, quangoes or political posturing. No multi disciplinery design teams with all and sundry dictating to each other. No Project managers calling endless meetings, wasting the designers' time and fees, reducing the end quality. No reams of pointless paperwork, over cautious H&S or blame culture.... need I go on?

Well I believe that we should be proud of the Olympics in London 2012 and if it makes sound financial sense to change what was only going to be a temporary venue then why not?
