GREENING THE ROOF

  • Comment
TECHNICAL

The uk looks to be getting greener, at least from where Sarnafil sits. In Germany it has offered single-ply roofing based on polyolefines rather than pvc for some time , and is now bringing this to the UK as Sarnafil T.

Materials based on polyethylene have been used in Germany since 1994 and in the us since 1991. us and European manufacturers are also exploring the use of polypropylene-based roofing materials. Confusingly, these are collectively called Flexible Polyolefines (fpo) in Europe but Thermoplastic Polyolefines (tpo) in North America.

The materials have a long history as geotechnical membranes so have proven chemical and microbial resistance. They are said to have relatively good low-temperature flexibility with no plasticiser to leach out leading to embrittlement, very good puncture resistance and better than normal heat- welding speeds with negligible emissions. Training for site staff takes place in enclosed rooms.

However, thermal expansion is greater so stabilising glass mats are needed. Bromine-based fire retardants are to be avoided as they lead to early cracking. Otherwise, life expectancy is 40+ years.
